Shiatsu/Holistic Acupressure

Shiatsu is a gentle form of holistic bodywork that originated in Japan: it literally means ‘finger pressure’ and can be described as like acupuncture without needles. It uses a combination of kneading, pressing, and gentle stretching techniques along meridians or channels of energy in the body, to help restore the body’s natural state of balance and wellbeing.

Shiatsu may help to manage pain by releasing tension from the muscles and connective tissues; it can also aid with fatigue, sleep, and digestion. Shiatsu is a holistic treatment which can help to rebalance the body’s homeostasis so can be helpful for a range of issues as well as general wellbeing.

Shiatsu can be deeply relaxing, so is particularly well-suited for emotional problems such as stress, because of its soothing effect on the autonomic nervous system.

What to expect
The practitioner will discuss with you what you would like to get from the treatment, and any relevant current and past health information to ensure the treatment is safe and right for you.

At Fiveways, Shiatsu/Holistic Acupressure treatments are offered on a massage table; the client is fully clothed and no oils are used, but it is helpful to wear comfortable clothing that allows free movement.

A hara diagnosis (gentle pressure on the abdomen) is usually used to determine the focus of the session, then the practitioner will use a combination of acupressure (light pressure with palms and thumbs), kneading and gentle stretches to help support and create space
in the joints. This can help to relax, release tension and restore balance in the body.
